The IN Colors of the Season: Black, Blue, and above all BROWN!

Black and Blue EVERYWHERE and BROWN around my waist! YEAH!

This Thursday was a big day for me and it's been a long time in the making.
My Brown Belt test took almost 2 hours and Sensei meant what he said when he said he was going to be hard on me and it was going to be a true test of what I had learned over the past 6 years. It began with covering kicks, punches, katas, terminology, technique, and how I apply them and make them work together. I also had to answer questions about martial arts, how it affects and changed my life, how I apply it's principles to real life, etc. from area Black Belts and Masters, Sensei Aaron Bailey, Instructor/Guro Chuck Pippin, and Silat Grand Master Mushtaq Ali. I also had to demonstrate my teaching ability on one of the youngest little guys in the program, Jarrett. He did a great job! Then came what Sensei called the "cruel and painful part" of the Brown Belt Test. Fighting. I had to fight Black Belt Instructor for Innovative Martial Arts, Chuck Pippin and then my Sensei Aaron Bailey for a total of 5 minutes straight. If I may be so blunt, they really worked me over good. They did not go easy on me and when they made full contact, I felt it and I have the "trophies" in black and blue to show for it! (love them!) I have to say though, I felt good about it and I think I gave them a good fight. I did have one of my VCD attacks at the very end and couldn't breathe, and where my vision went to tunnel vision, and I was getting dissy, but they helped me through it.
The last part that was required of me, was to share with everyone in a 3 minute speech on what Martial arts means to me.
What My Martial Arts Mean To Me

To most people, martial arts is just a sport. With me, it is my passion. Without the arts, I do not know what I would do. With only 6 years experience my abilities have tremendously expanded and I have gone places that I had only dreamed of going and perusing.
It all started here in the traditional karate, kyokashin-kai or also known as Ro-Ken. With the skills Masoyama taught Robert Kendall and the skills he taught to Sensei, I had the best start of my martial arts career that I could wish for. With the fundamentals and the discipline for about 2 years, I was out doing tournaments and exploring my love and passion for the arts when I was only about 9 years old. I had just started trying out new martial arts and decided to start with the Chinese style of WuShu, where I was invited to join the full force demo team. There I went with the team performing all over west Michigan. Then is where I was noticed by a very special person. This person was grand master WuBin. He must have seen something in me, because he invited me to go and train with him in the summer of 2005 when I was only 10 years old in China at the WuBin WuShu training center. And with me on the trip was a new found, world class coach, and now my grand master, Bong Jornales. And that was only one stair step in my road to success. I had just started training with him, just in private lessons to get me into the advanced classes. And to his surprise, I caught in no time at all and was taking in information like a sponge. Within a month, I was in on the advanced classes on Monday nights. With his help, I started and improved not only in the Arnis Sikaran Jornales System, but also in the traditional Philippine full contact stick fighting. Within only one year, I was training for the WEKAF (also known as World Escrima Kali Arnis Federation) regional, national, and world championships. First was the regional championships, where I swept all my divisions, which gave me the chance to go to the Nationals, where I also swept all my divisions, and got a official seat on the u.s national team. Then, in July 2006 it was time to really put my training and knowledge to the test. It was time for the world championships in Orlando, Florida. There I competed in traditional multiple weapons, and fought in the full contact double stick fighting division. I left that day with two world championship titles under my belt. That was the best feeling I had ever felt! And I know that I would not have been able to do it if in were not for the wonderful coaches I had to give me the knowledge I needed. But when I got back, the training did not stop for one day. While doing at least 2 performances all over Michigan, and not months after the worlds, I was introduced to Mushtaq Ali by one of my coaches. I did not realize until I started training, that I was being trained by one of the best kept secrets in the world. With training with him in the style of Silat, I grew to love what he has been teaching me.
Now, all this leads right now where I am training for the WEKAF 10th world championships. I am currently training 5 days a week. And pursuing my love for the arts. Without martial arts I do not know what I would do. Even though I miss out on going to the mall, going to birthday parties and all those thing that normal teenagers do, it is my passion and I am willing to give up what I have to, just to be able to train and expand my knowledge. I have learned not just the moves, but the knowledge and discipline to take me into my bright future. But, my martial arts is nowhere near done. I have a whole life ahead of me and I plan to make it the best that I can…that means that I will be in the arts and pass it down to the generations to come so that maybe, I will brighten kids lives like all my instructors have brightened mine.
I plan to make a difference and pursue my dreams no matter what obstacle may come in my way. I here to make a difference, I am here to learn true way of the martial arts.

2007 MID-WEST REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS S-W-E-E-P-!!!

Yesterday was the day we have all been waiting for. Finally, the Midwest Regionals. For those of you who don't know, competitors must place 1st or 2nd here in order to earn the right to compete for a spot on the US National Team. I have been preparing for this for a long time. First, Forms. I competed in the traditional multiple weapons division. The competition was tough and I had to compete against my team-mate Matthew Quintero. But, we took first and second. I won first place and all my competitors were guys! Yeah! (That's why I'm not offended when Bobbe says I hit like a girl! Instead, I'll take it as a compliment! Anyway, after that was all over, it was time for the best part.....STICK FIGHTING! I competed first in the girls, 12-17 year old division in the full contact single stick fighting. The first round I fought, I had one of my breathing attacks (vocal cord disfunction) but I got over that pretty quick. :) I fought again and again, but when it was all over, I had won first place in that too! I was pretty pumped by then, because that was the division that I was worried about. Probably because that was the division that I did not qualify for last year. But I worked hard and went in this year wanting it badly and won! So then, it was time for the double stick fighting. They called my name, and I went up to fight, and I went at it for three rounds, and at the end, when we went up to the center of the ring to see who won, they raised my hand! And, Guess What Else!!! Way COOL! I broke two sticks over the heads of my opponent and can you believe her helmet went flying off????!!! II DID! So I am so very happy to report that thanks to everyone who coached me and supported me and prayed for me, I went and SWEPT THE REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, which qualified me for the U.S National Championships in California, in Feb. 2008! PRAY FOR ME! I'll be training hard and I'll do my best to make you proud!

I'm off to start the serious training!

PUMPKIN GUTS!

I told you I'd eat just about anything!
Happy Halloween!

DREAMS

I just wanted you all to know the top ten things that I want to do in my life time. (in no order)

  1. I want to become a black belt in Ro-Ken karate and Arnis Sikaran Jornales System
  2. I want to be in a Hollywood movie (or two! ;))
  3. I want to possibly become a model
  4. I want to have my own karate school where I would teach all the martial arts that I have a black belt and teach the kids and adults that want to learn the arts
  5. I want to be known all around the world for my accomplishments
  6. I want to reach the goal of winning 8 world titles
  7. I want to teach a student that makes it to be a world champion
  8. I want to become a Master in Arnis, Karate, and Silat, and whatever else I come across
  9. I want to make all my family and friends that believe in me proud to know me
  10. I want to be a clear image of the wonderful Bruce Lee

I just thought that some of you might want to know where I want to go with my Martial Arts. This has already been a wonderful experience and I am really looking forward to the future and what it hold for me.

To those who think that they can get me down by making fun of me and starting roomers about me, have fun! It only works for a second than I am over it. I know that my future is bright, I will be praying for you to find yourself like I found mine....so you can quit obsessing about mine and start learning what you can do.

To those who believe in me and hope that I will make it big one day, I really cannot tell you how much it means to me that you care about me and what my future holds. I have the best coaches in the world, they believe in me and helped make me what i am today. I also have the best family in the world. I cannot tell you how many times my sister and brother have sat at my performances and demos. Thank you guys! and my mom and dad, I could not ask for better parents. They have helped me accomplish my tasks and they help me to my feet when I am on the ground. They are there for me day or night to help me. I love you all! And to my "fans" and community, I could not ask for anything more! even though I don't live in a huge town, you guys make a huge difference in my life. Everyone has been so helpful in helping me fund raise, and help me be where I am today.

And last but not least, I want to thank my Best Friend in the whole world Alli for always being there for me. She is there in the middle of the day of night if I need her. It means a lot to me that you care about me as much as I care about you. We have been BFF's since Kindergarten and i hope our friendship will last a lifetime and beyond. You mean the world to me and I do not know what I would do without you! :) I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you all for helping me so much! I have only begun my journey and I really appreciate all that all of you have done for me! I could not be who I am today if it wasn't for you.

Great News! :)

For the past couple of months, Mushtaq has been wanting to get me into a dance school to work on my fluidity and to go along with the beats of music. Well, I tried out for my high schools dance team and made it!!!!! :) I not only made it, but I got many lead parts (in the front and middle) of many of our performances. I thought that was SO COOL! I'm working very hard on the performances and trying not to burn myself out right before the Regional championships, but this was an offer that I just could not turn down. We will be doing Pom, Jazz, and Hip-Hop routines and will be performing them at the High School basketball games. ( I will also be performing my martial arts there at the half time too!) (what a mix!) I guess the crowd will get to see the other side of my abilities! :) hahaha!

Great Lakes All Star Tournament SWEEP!

I just got back from the Great Lakes All Star Open tournament with great news!!!!! I first competed in traditional advanced weapons and did the Tali-Bong with the form Siow which is Grand Master Bong Jornales's Kata (Arnis Sikaran Jornales System). I had about 6 competitors and I got 1st place! Then, I had to quick change into my traditional karate GI so that I could then compete in the 12-13 adv. Traditional open hand forms where I first did Empi and Basada back to back. These are traditional Japanese Kyokushinkai Kan Kata's. BTW, my Sensei Aaron Bailey also did Empi and got 2nd in his division. They said there was a tie for first. S then, i did Myone, Master Bong's open hand form (Arnis Sikaran Jornales System) and I won by majority. So, then with two 1st place trophies, I went on to fight in the 12-13 advanced division (again against all boys :) ) and had a buy, so i only fought twice, but I won 1 st place there too! Sensei got 1st in Fighting and then went on to fight Kiss for Grand Champion.
So, I swept in my division! I love it when everything comes together! KEWL HUH?!?!?! Happy Birthday Master Bong! This ones for you!
Oh, BTW, to the guy who yelled out when I was doing the tie-breaker with Master Bong's open hand kata Mayon, "She's doing her own kata! That's a 2 point deduction! My own! You can't learn anything if you're doing your own." FYI Mayon is a Volcano in the Phillipine Islands. Mayon is meant to reflect and tell the story of the volcano. You are a coach. You have bad manners. And, for the record, if I did make up my own kata, which I have, perhaps I should get 2 extra points for creativity, enginuity, and GUTS! Shame on you for being so rude.

Fall Gathering of the Tribes 2007

Just back from another BIG day of training! This friday was the beginning of all the fun, it was the meet-and-greet! It was a lot of fun and that is where I met all kinds of new people and got to catch-up with the "regulars" that I met in the spring. Then, yesterday (Saturday) was the beginning of the training. We started with Cody Fielding who specializes in RMAX and Russian Sambo. He helped all of us with about a 2-2.5 hour session on grappling and how to coach other people. That was really kewl! I love the idea of grappling (just a hint Mushtaq :0) )

Then we went on to train with Don Young and Chuck Pippin. They went over the kicking techniques. That was really kool because not only do I like to fight people with sticks, I LOVE to kick! (It does help to have long legs :) ) I learned a lot of new kicks that I will have to try out in the ring next week! (On the local circuit, I'm going to compete in the Great Lakes all Star Open next Saturday.) I also learned some awesome new jumping kick combo's. After lunch that day, we went on to train with Buzz Smith. That was awesome because he does some of the Japanese stuff that Sensei teaches and a lot pf the same style that Grand Master Bong does, only different. So that was good to get a different perspective on the Philippine art. I really like these gatherings. I learn so much and it is an awesome workout. Plus, I get to hang with cool people who really understand me!

Fight Night!

Grand Master Bong and I

It's Wednesday Night, FIGHT NIGHT! Just got home from class and I'm completely exhausted. Master Bong and I had lots of fun beating each other up with single and double sticks, smack sticks, and padded knives. I am so happy! Master Bong said that I have greatly improved so I will keep working hard to make him proud. He also said that I have been doing very very good in knife fighting. I think the extra workouts are paying off big! I got in a great day of training and have a big day ahead of me tomorrow in RoKen Class. For now, good night;0)

Every one told me that I looked like Cinderella! It was so kewl! I cannot wait until the Snowball dance in the winter! I hope it will be just as fun if not more! Well, I hope you like seeing me look like a girl.........it won't happen again for at least 3 months!!! lol!

I love my home town!

I love my hometown! Saturday was a special day for me. I need to back up a little bit. For the past 4 years, I have entered the talent show at the Fall Festival and each year I earned first place and prize money that the committee knew I needed to put toward my training. But last year, even though I won, I felt really bad because I heard other kids saying they weren't going to enter the talent show because they had to compete against me and didn't feel like they could win. So, I told the committee that I would love to perform every year but that I wasn't going to compete any more because I didn't want anyone to feel that way. This year, the Fall Harvest Festival Committee asked me to perform in between talent show acts. I love to perform, especially for my home town because so many people here have been there for me from the very start and have sent good luck cards, made donations, prayed for me and cheered me on and encouraged me to reach for my dreams and make them come true! Anyway, I can't believe what they did! After I was done performing, Bernie called me up on stage and presented me with a can full of money that they had passed around before I ever even got there! It had my picture on it and said, "Olympic Donations for Mariah Moore". I am so happy that my community supports me and believes in me. It really makes all the late nights of practice and training 6 days a week and all the blood, sweat, and bruises soooo worth it! I will do my best to make you all very proud of me! It's such a small town and nobody is rich here. I appreciate your gift so much and every penny will go straight to my training. I can't forget to tell you about my little friend! After I performed, a little girl that I don't even know ran up to me and gave me her teddy bear! These things are very special to me and I won't ever forget them!

oh my!

I am so very sorry that I have not written in so long. I have been very busy with getting ready for regionals, performing and training. I have my worlds form pretty much done, but it still needs a little tweaking! I have been really training in the fighting a lot too! Just this last Sunday,I went to a Sulong tournament in Chicago. I got 1st in pacific island traditional weapons form (I did my worlds form for practice), I got 1st in women's knife fighting, 3rd in men's....yeah I did say MENS knife fighting, and i got 5th out of about 25 again MEN smack stick fighting! It was a very successful day! Instead of trophies, I won some very very cool new tools! A sword(my new best friend), a knife(my partner), and a killer pair of sticks!I am so glad that I have the coaches I have. I would not be who I am and be as accomplished as I am at martial arts if it were not for Grand Master Bong Jornales, Mushtaq Ali, and Steve VanHarn. And not to mention all the wonderful people who i have also trained with here and there! It all adds up and I really want to thank all of you for believing in me! I love you guys!

Well, Back to training!

Take a KICK at Parker's Cancer! a BIG Success!

Parker and his family and friends!

Next II None with Parker and Me!

Maranda with Parker, Ashley, and Patrick

Chuck with Parker, Ashley and Patrick

With the help of some very special, very talented people with great big hearts, on Monday August 20th,

WE TOOK A GREAT BIG KICK AT PARKER'S CANCER!

When I met him, I knew I had to do what I could to help save him. So I went to work on it and asked for help from some great people who came through for me and especially for Parker in a big way!

It all began with Maranda. I got in touch with her and told her that I wanted to do a variety show to benefit Parker. She said she'd help me out any way she could and boy did she! She offered to emcee and even set us up to perform at West Michigan's premier fun park, Craig's Cruisers! Chuck Pippin of Innovative Martial Arts who is a cancer survivor directed the event for me and coordinated all the acts. I called up some of my favorite acts that I performed with, competed against, or train with. I knew I could count on them! So many great people donated their time and talents all for Parker. Perfect strangers donated money and bought shirts and wrist bands. All of the proceeds go to Parker for medical expenses and special needs. That night we raised almost $1,000.00 but that's not all! We still have about 250 shirts to sell at 10.00 each and almost 500 bracelets at 5.00 each. We will sell them at the Alto Fall Festival and at Fieldstock in Parker's extended families' home town on Labor Day weekend. So, by the time were done "Taking a Kick at Parker's Cancer" I hope to reach 5,000.00 for him!

Training in the rain.......Dedication, Determination, Drive! Me! (INSANE? I don't think so...)

A photographer at the Talent show said to someone I know, "You know she's insane don't you?" Do you know that they said back? "Nope. She's one tough broad!" Wonder what Master Guru Bobbe would have said back to them??????

1st Place!

Last night, I went to the annual Kent County Youth Fair. For the past three years I have been in the youth talent show. This year Mushtaq and Sensei Aaron Bailey came to watch and critique. They helped me a lot. Oh! Sunday night my mom and I went on to the 4-h web site and looked over the rules for the show..... the rules said that the performances HAD to be no more than 4 minnutes. The one I had prepared was 6 minutes. So in the pouring rain at 8 o'clock on Sunday night mom and I had to put together a brand new performance. I have wanted to do a performance to Eye of the tiger for a long time. It is exactly 3:48. It was stressful to cram it together in less than 24 hours but I did it. Sensei said I did great! I think Mushtaq was pleased too. He noticed that I kept my knees bent and had deeper stances. Guess what! I won 1st place and 100.00 dollars to put towards the 2008 World Championships in the Philippines!

A Great Big Thanks To Mushtaq and Sensei for coming and supporting me!!

Training, Training, And More Training!

This week was a very busy week. With Master Bong, we went over most if not all weapons forms and on Wednesday we drilled on single and double stick fighting. 8 one minute rounds of double and single stick combined and then One 2 minute round of padded stick fighting.

I have been doing a lot of polishing with Steve and Mushtaq on my Tali Bong Form which I will be doing in the WEKAF Regionals, Nationals, and Worlds. Although I have a lot more polishing to do, I think it is comming together very well! I am very happy to have the coaches I have! I wouldn't be the martial artist I am today and could never have accomplished everything I have without all my awesome instructors! Thanks Guys! Well, back to training! :)

Today I did the last Park Party of the summer :( I had so much fun and met so many great people! I really do not want it to be over. I think today was the best performance yet! I did three shows and the second one, I decided to dedicate to my friends in Next II None (the boy band that sings and dances at the park parties with me) I did it to the song "Heart Breaker" by Pat Benatar. I had so much fun! Instead of wearing the same old uniform...I wore cut off shorts and a leather jacket! :) :) It was so cool!well, dinner is done so I have to go.

I am going to the hospital to see Parker today! :) please keep him in your prayers!!!!!!!!!!!!!
